New Box Status Report

The G4 is running like a charm. Thanks in part to the somewhat current version of TechTool Pro 3, some strong coffee and the patience and understanding of my wife and son. Now if only I didn’t have to stare at the clunky ol’ 1705 monitor. Man, this thing takes up more space than my parent’s first microwave oven. Remember when those first became popular in the early 80s? Now, picture the counterspace it took up. I may as well have a television set sitting on my desk!

With Elliot’s second birthday fast approaching, we haven’t even started the scrambling involved in planning/organizing for a party. With numero uno last year being quite the success, we’ll hopefully get it together in time for an ass-kicking sequel.

We’re starting to get used to using control strip (finally) and are finding it useful for keeping the desktop relatively clutter-free. I know, big deal.

Filing Down My Patience

Man, what a month it’s turning out to be.
Elliot had been sick for the last few weeks, teething and having some growth spurts, which as you may know, keeps kids quite active when it should be bedtime and/or makes it hard for them to rest comfortably. To sum it up, I haven’t had a solid night’s sleep in, like, a month now. Can you say f@#kin’ cranky?

The old 7600 is out the door to it’s new home with my mother-in-law. In the four plus years that I’ve been using a Mac, I’ve never had to enable and use file sharing. Nothing like trying to move (and find) all your stuff (extensions and preferences included) via AppleTalk ethernet file sharing when you’re setting up shop elsewhere. Especially with only one monitor to share between the two boxes. Definitely a learning experience and a test of patience.

Geeky Hardware Stuff

November? Nothing like keeping a weblog as a reminder of just how busy you can get. At least the Handspring is somewhat up-to-date.

So, I’ve just about made the transition from the old 7600 to the G4, hence the lagging entries. A few minor adjustments and then it’s bye-bye old, hello new. I’ve finally decided it’s time to catch up with the rest of the wired population and have a CD burner installed since there’s enough space for it, make the move to OS 9 (easing my way up to X) and I’ve also picked up an optical wheel mouse. For you PC users, I know this isn’t a big deal. As a Mac user….what the hell am I supposed to do with this right click button now? Seriously, I’m quite familiar with Windows in the nine-to-five world, so it’s kinda weird that I’ve now got those extra shortcuts at my fingertips. Scrolling rocks. As for the burner, I’ve got piles of Zip100 discs lying around to start with.
