Anger Me

angermeOver the weekend I finally got to see Italian filmmaker Elio Gelmini’s interview-styled documentary on American maverick filmmaker, Kenneth Anger. When I first learned of Anger Me‘s release earlier this year, I kept my eyes peeled for my online DVD rental site to add it to their roster. Once available, it was promptly bumped to the top of my list.

Throughout the film, Anger recalls his works, his travels and relationships, most notably with Dr. Alfred Kinsey, who was his first-ever customer, purchasing a copy of his first film, Fireworks for the Kinsey Institute.

Naturally, a documentary on Kenneth Anger wouldn’t be complete without mention of Aleister Crowley. In addition to speaking about Crowley’s influence, the DVD bonus features include footage of Anger visiting Crowley’s one-time Italian villa, where, nearly 50 years ago, he’d scrubbed off the whitewash paint thrown over several of the magus’s murals by soldiers under Mussolini’s orders.

With this documentary, and the two separate volumes of restored films made earlier this year for the first time on DVD, it’s safe to say that 2007 is the year of digital Anger. Let’s hope restored versions of Hollywood Babylon (I and II) see their day on DVD, too.

More Sounds: I could eat a knob at night / Scratchin’ “Bob”

My first foray into cutting up spoken word and adding music to it (from a while back): “I Could Eat a Knob at Night” (submitted to the Ricky Gervais Show )

And a piece I submitted to the SubGenius Hour of Slack which appeared on the air: “Scratchin’ Bob:

New digs, new features ‘n’ stuff

I’ve recently switched over Laughing Squid as the host for this site and decided to polish up stuff around here (back-end stuff, mostly) and throw up a new lick o’ paint. The archives page is now being handled by one simple, brilliant, little tag, and I’ve *finally* started using an embedded Flash player and plugin to handle my audio files, just so’s ‘yer not staring at a gray page, should you decide to listen to anything here.

I’ll eventually finish importing all the previous posts, dating back to 2002 and jazz up the photos page, which is non-existent for the time being.

A Thousand Stars Beneath the Bar

nightmare

Last summer, while on a family vacation out on beautiful Vancouver Island, my old pal Dave Read and I, after some awesome bbq, settled into his home office for an evening of beers and sound fuckery. When I got back to Toronto, I overdubbed a little more bedlam to the melodic haze.

Ladies and gentlemen…A Thousand Stars Beneath the Bar:

The Night We Never Slept

mapped

It’s kind of fitting to be posting this track in the middle of the night. I’d done this up using Electroplankton a while back and am only now getting around to posting it here.
