Oh, Canada

So, there I was earlier this evening, standing on the grass next to the Credit River, a lovely breeze blowing in the dark; thousands of us gathered to watch the Canada Day fireworks. I had my hoodie pulled up, Molly bundled up in my arms as we watched the vibrant colours bursting in the sky.

One cheesy Canadian artist’s song finishes (I’m looking your way, Shania Twain) and the opening bars of The Kings’ “Switchin’ to Glide” rings out over the sound system. From the lights shining down, I see Molly’s eyes, wide as saucers, following the visual stimuli and occasionally looking to me with an excited and slightly WTF-look on her face.

I began to dance with my daughter as my wife and son sit back on the grass and take in the light show. My heart felt like it might burst with love, for my family and (kinda) for my country.

Sometimes, the right song at the right time…

Hobo With A Shotgun

hobo with a shotgunOn the streets there is only one law, and he is going to deliver justice one shell at a time.

So goes the premise for this Troma-like (and definitely NSFW), awesome, Canadian-made trailer by Dartmouth, Nova Scotia filmmakers Jason Eisener, Rob Cotterill, and John Davies. Supposedly, the deal is that it was shot for $100 (I’m assuming in Canadian $$) in under three weeks for submission to Robert Rodriguez’s _Grindhouse Trailer_ contest at this year’s SXSW.

Here’s hoping our east coast brethren take the prize!

UPDATE: You can check out some of the other entrants over on the YouTube.

Captain Sterility

First off, thanks to Robot Johnny for the awesome illustration now adorning the new and improved banner. The font is also his wicked Science Project.

And now, the more pressing matter at hand: the vasectomy!

norelpref

norelprefOver the recent months, I’ve been tuning my brain into the SubGenius Hour of Slack podcast, from the good folks at the Church of the SubGenius (praise “Bob”). One of the cooler sound collage artists/composers constantly featured on the show is the wonderful norelpref, who offers a ton of his mp3 clips available for free downloading. I’m still digging through his site, which is updated frequently, and am excited about the whole discovery process. Definitely an essential these days.
